Fri Jan 10 06:42:36 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court Delays Decision on Mathura Temple-Mosque Dispute Consolidation
**New Delhi, January 10, 2025** – The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned a plea challenging the Allahabad High Court’s decision to consolidate 15 lawsuits related to the Mathura Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah Masjid dispute. The court indicated it may consider the plea at a later date.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar expressed a prima facie view in favor of the High Court’s consolidation, stating it benefits both sides by avoiding multiple proceedings. The High Court had ordered the consolidation in January 2024.
The Supreme Court’s decision to adjourn stems from its consideration of a 1991 law on places of worship and a December 12, 2024 order restraining courts from entertaining new lawsuits seeking the reclamation of religious places.
A lawyer representing the Shahi Idgah mosque committee argued that the consolidated lawsuits were dissimilar in nature and that the consolidation would create complications. The Supreme Court bench disagreed, asserting that consolidation simplifies the process and benefits all parties involved.
The case has been adjourned until the week commencing April 1st, 2025.
