**Kochi, Kerala:** A new book, “P. Jayachandran: Malayalaathinte Madhuchandrika” (P. Jayachandran: The Honey Moon of Malayalam), explores the life of renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran. Authored by S. Manoharan and published by Mathrubhumi Books, the book delves into the singer’s formative years, tracing his journey from childhood to his entry into the Malayalam film music industry.
Born on March 3, 1944, into the prominent Palliyath Nair family of Chengamanagalam in Ernakulam district, Jayachandran (then Jayankuttan) enjoyed a privileged upbringing. His early life was marked by comfort and affluence, with a large household staff and a traditional Nair lifestyle. The family moved several times during his childhood, residing in palatial homes in Ernakulam before settling in Chengamanagalam. His memories of these early years are filled with vivid descriptions of Onam celebrations, interactions with family servants, and car trips with his father.
His musical journey began in Aluva, where he sang devotional songs at St. Dominic’s Church. He also learned the mridangam under the tutelage of Rama Subbayyar. His early musical influences included Tamil film songs and stage plays, fostering a deep appreciation for actors like M.G.R. and Sivaji Ganesan. Jayachandran fondly recalls his childhood experiences playing in the Periyar River, which he later poetically compared to the vibrant actress Sheela.
His schooling took place in various institutions, including Palliyath School and Aluva St. Mary’s High School. It was at the National High School in Irinjalakuda, however, that his musical talents truly blossomed, thanks to the influence of his teacher K.V. Ramanathan, and the school’s literary association. He excelled in both mridangam and light music, winning several prizes at the state-level school youth festival. His participation in an inter-school camp in Delhi, where he met Jawaharlal Nehru, remains a cherished memory.
After completing his schooling, he joined Christ College, Irinjalakuda, where his love for cricket flourished. He pursued a BSc (Zoology) degree, playing cricket competitively. During this time, he frequently visited his brother in Madras, where he met K.J. Yesudas, who became a close friend. It was during one of these visits that he first met Devarajan Master, the renowned music director who would play a significant role in his future career.
Jayachandran’s professional singing career began with a chance opportunity at a fund-raising event for the Indo-Pak war. This led to his debut in the film “Kunjalimarakkar,” followed by “Kalithozhan.” His initial recording sessions were fraught with anxiety, but he eventually found his footing, establishing himself as a noteworthy playback singer in the Malayalam film industry. The book highlights his early successes, including the memorable song “Manjalayil Mungi Thorthi,” composed by Devarajan Master and penned by P. Bhaskaran. The book concludes with his early career struggles, and eventual success. “P. Jayachandran: Malayalaathinte Madhuchandrika” offers a nostalgic and insightful look at the life and beginnings of one of Malayalam cinema’s most celebrated singers.
