**Imphal, Manipur –** Tensions are rising in Manipur following an alleged assault on a Liangmai Naga woman by members of the Kuki tribe. The incident, which occurred in K Lungwiram village, has sparked outrage and led to a 15-day eviction notice issued by the Konsakhul (Konsaram) Village Authority to Kuki tenants residing on Naga land.
The woman, whose brother provided details to reporters, was reportedly attacked by approximately 30 Kuki men while attempting to build a house on land claimed by the Naga village authority. The attackers allegedly threatened to burn construction equipment and verbally abused her. The woman’s phone was also broken during the assault. A video circulating online appears to show a group of men confronting a bulldozer.
The Konsakhul Village Authority issued a memorandum to top state officials, stating that the Kuki (specifically Leilon Vaiphei) community had been allowed to settle as tenants but their lease has expired. The authority demands their immediate evacuation within 15 days, threatening forceful removal if they refuse. The memorandum cites recent “anti-social activities” targeting Naga villagers as justification for the eviction.
In response to the attack, Liangmai Naga women have initiated an indefinite blockade of Makhan Gate, a major thoroughfare. The Indigenous People’s Forum, a Naga civil society organization, has condemned the violence and called for immediate intervention from authorities, demanding protection for Naga villagers. The organization points to video evidence of the harassment and threats.
While no Kuki organization has yet commented publicly on the incident, this latest conflict follows a similar December incident where Kuki volunteers allegedly assaulted members of a Naga student body. That matter was later resolved through mediation. The current situation underscores the ongoing tensions and land disputes between Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur.
