Beginning his career in journalism, Nandy rose to prominence as the editor of *The Illustrated Weekly of India* (1983-1991), and also helmed other leading publications including *The Independent* and *Filmfare*. A celebrated poet, he authored over 40 books of poetry in English and translated works from Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi. His literary contributions earned him the Padma Shri award in 1977.
