**Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, January 8, 2025** – The Tiruchi City Corporation is set to undertake a major road repair project to fix damage caused by the recent monsoon and the concurrent execution of Phase II underground drainage (UGD) works. Over 120 kilometers of roads across Zones 3, 4, and 5, including areas such as K.K. Nagar, Tiruverumbur, and Woraiyur, have been identified for relaying.
The simultaneous implementation of UGD and drinking water projects significantly damaged existing roads, a situation exacerbated by heavy rainfall. Some roads, even those recently laid after UGD completion, became impassable. Temporary repairs using gravel were implemented in certain areas.
The Corporation has requested ₹200 crore from the State government to fund the extensive repairs. Funds from the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF) and Nagarpura Salaigal Membattu Thittam (NSMT) are expected to be utilized. A proposal has been submitted, and the Corporation Commissioner, V. Saravanan, expects tenders to be floated shortly, with work commencing by the end of January.
The project will not only restore roads damaged during pipeline installations but also upgrade some interior mud roads to bitumen surfaces. Roads damaged by the monsoon will also be repaired as part of the initiative.
