Tue Jan 07 03:13:27 UTC 2025: ## New Respiratory Virus HMPV Detected in India, Sparks Concerns but No Lockdown Needed

**New Delhi, India** – A new respiratory virus, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), has been detected in India, causing a surge in public concern. Five cases have been reported in just one day, with two each in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and one in Gujarat. All cases involve children, the youngest being only two months old.

The emergence of HMPV in India comes after a recent outbreak in China, triggering social media discussions and comparisons to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fears of a potential lockdown have surfaced, echoing the stringent measures implemented during the COVID-19 outbreak.

However, Union Health Minister JP Nadda has reassured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation and that there is no need for alarm. Experts have confirmed that HMPV is not as severe as COVID-19 and that a lockdown is unnecessary.

HMPV is a globally recognized respiratory virus causing breathing difficulties across all age groups. While it has been present in India for some time, its recent detection has heightened awareness. The Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra governments have also allayed public fears. Delhi’s government has instructed hospitals to prepare for a potential increase in respiratory illnesses.

Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar, a former ICMR scientist, stated that HMPV is typically more prevalent during winter but is not fatal. He emphasized that while there’s no need for excessive concern, children under five exhibiting cold symptoms should be kept home to prevent transmission.

Dr. Sanjeev Bagai, head of NephroPlus clinics, added that HMPV has been present worldwide for over two decades. No specific medication, antiviral treatment, or vaccine is needed. Preventive measures include mask-wearing, maintaining good hygiene, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and ensuring children are well-nourished and hydrated.
