**New Delhi, January 7, 2025** – The Indian government has set an ambitious target of $2 billion in organic food exports by 2030, announcing new regulations to streamline the process. A public notice from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) mandates that all organic exports must be certified under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and accompanied by a Transaction Certificate (TC).
The revised NPOP, effective 180 days from January 5th, aims to simplify procedures and boost exports. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been instrumental in making the regulations more farmer-friendly. This initiative builds on a decade of steady growth, with organic exports increasing from $213 million in 2012-13 to $494.80 million in 2023-24. During the current fiscal year (April-November), exports already surged by approximately 40% to ₹456 million (approximately $55 million USD, based on current exchange rates), exceeding the same period’s figures of ₹495 million in 2023-24.
Major export destinations include the USA, European Union, Canada, UK, Switzerland, Australia, the Middle East, and various Asian countries. Key export items are cereals, millets, processed foods, tea, spices, dry fruits, sugar, medicinal plants, pulses, coffee, and oilseeds. To further promote Indian organic products globally, APEDA will facilitate participation in BioFach, the world’s largest organic food trade fair in Nuremberg, Germany, from February 11th.
