Tue Jan 07 15:20:00 IST 2025: ## Stay Off Roads: VDOT Pleads as Winter Storm Blankets Virginia
**RICHMOND, VA** – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging Virginians to stay off the roads Monday as a significant winter storm continues to impact the state. Hazardous driving conditions, including snow, freezing rain, and sleet, have created treacherous travel in western and northern Virginia.
VDOT crews are working around the clock to clear nearly 60,000 miles of state-maintained roads, but the agency warns that complete snow removal will take time. Many major roadways remain snow-covered or icy, with lower-volume roads and neighborhoods largely untouched. Interstates and primary roads (1-599) are prioritized, followed by secondary roads (600 and above) and residential streets as conditions allow.
VDOT emphasizes that even priority roads may have icy patches, and motorists should avoid all unnecessary travel. Those who must travel are advised to use extreme caution and check road conditions via the free 511 mobile app, 511.vdot.virginia.gov, or by calling 511. Reports of hazardous conditions can be submitted via my.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
