PATNA, INDIA – A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Bihar, India, on Tuesday morning at approximately 6:38 AM, causing widespread panic but no reported casualties. The tremors were felt across several districts, including Patna, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Purnea, Bhagalpur, Munger, and Vaishali. Residents reported being jolted awake by the shaking, with many fleeing their homes out of fear.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Tibet, near the Nepal border, where the quake registered a magnitude of 7.1. While Bihar experienced a significant tremor, weaker tremors were also felt in Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi-NCR region.
In Patna, residents rushed out of their apartments into the cold morning streets. Similar scenes unfolded in Sivan, Supaul, and Gopalganj, where the earthquake was also felt. Although widespread fear resulted in many people leaving their homes, the Bihar Disaster Management Department has reported no damage or casualties so far.
Several residents from Supaul district described their experiences, detailing how the shaking caused them to flee their homes. In one instance, residents at a Shiva temple in Supaul city reported feeling a slight tremor and observing the temple bell shaking.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, but initial reports indicate no major damage or loss of life.
