**Beirut, Lebanon –** A senior Hezbollah official confirmed on Sunday that the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike last September. Nasrallah died in the group’s war operations room during a series of strikes that flattened several buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs on September 27, 2023. The revelation comes amidst ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah following a two-month war that ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in November.
Wafiq Safa, a top Hezbollah security official, announced Nasrallah’s death at a press conference near the site of the attack. While Safa provided limited details, the confirmation follows Lebanese media reports and speculation. The airstrikes, which killed six people according to the Lebanese Health Ministry, reportedly targeted Nasrallah and other senior officials during an underground meeting.
Nasrallah’s assassination, after 32 years leading Hezbollah, escalated existing low-level conflict into a full-scale war that devastated parts of southern and eastern Lebanon. The ceasefire, which came into effect November 27, stipulates the withdrawal of both Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters, weapons, and infrastructure from southern Lebanon within 60 days. The Lebanese army, supported by UN peacekeepers, is to become the sole armed presence in the region.
However, the implementation of the ceasefire remains precarious. Both Lebanon and Hezbollah have criticized Israel’s continued strikes and overflights, and incomplete withdrawal from Lebanese villages. Israel, in turn, accuses the Lebanese military of failing to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure. Hezbollah has warned of further strikes against Israel if its troops don’t fully withdraw by the end of the month. Further complicating matters, Hezbollah official Naim Kassem stated that the government will meet with U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein soon to discuss the situation. Hochstein played a key role in negotiating the ceasefire. The ongoing situation leaves the future of the fragile peace uncertain.
