**Coimbatore, January 6, 2025** – Coimbatore city police reported a significant increase in crimes against women and children in 2024, with 398 cases registered. This includes four rape cases, 45 cases of molestation, and five cases of alleged abduction. A substantial number of cases (224) fell under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act, while 76 cases were registered under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, leading to 200 arrests and the rescue of victims. The city also saw 35 cases of cruelty by husbands and relatives, but no dowry-related deaths were reported.
Child protection also remains a serious concern, with 80 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. While the police boast a high detection rate (388 out of 389 cases), convictions remain lower. In 2024, courts convicted individuals in two rape cases, one case of cruelty by husband and relatives, six cases of women harassment, and one Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act case, in addition to 19 POCSO cases. The police emphasize their commitment to combating these crimes and protecting vulnerable populations.
