Sun Jan 05 05:23:43 UTC 2025: ## India Remains Calm Amidst Rising Respiratory Illness Cases in China

**NEW DELHI** – India’s Ministry of Health has assured citizens there is no need for alarm regarding the recent surge in respiratory illnesses in China, including those caused by the human metapneumovirus (HMPV). While acknowledging reports of increased hospitalizations in China, the ministry stated on Saturday that India is well-prepared to handle any potential influx of respiratory infections.

Following a meeting of the Joint Monitoring Group to assess the situation, the ministry emphasized that India is closely monitoring updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international channels. They have also requested timely updates from the WHO to ensure a proactive approach. Indian surveillance data shows no significant increase in respiratory infections or related hospitalizations within the country.

The ministry highlighted that viruses like HMPV are already circulating in India, and the existing healthcare infrastructure is capable of managing any potential cases. They urged citizens to remain calm and adhere to standard health precautions, including maintaining hygiene and seeking medical advice if symptoms appear.

China has downplayed reports of a major flu outbreak, attributing the increase in respiratory illnesses to the usual seasonal patterns exacerbated by recent cold weather. Chinese officials have asserted that the situation is under control and that travel to China remains safe. Videos circulating on social media showing crowded hospitals have been dismissed by Chinese authorities as typical for this time of year. The Chinese National Health Commission has issued guidelines for preventing respiratory illnesses during winter.

Despite the reassurances, India continues to monitor the situation closely, leveraging its robust surveillance system and healthcare resources to mitigate any potential threat.
