Sat Jan 04 15:06:34 UTC 2025: ## Adyar River’s Past and Present Explored in Chennai Story Trail

**CHENNAI, January 4, 2025** – A story trail along Chennai’s Adyar River on Saturday highlighted the waterway’s rich history and its current challenges due to urbanization. The event, led by historian V. Sriram and former Water Resources Department engineer S. Thirunavukkarasu, drew participants from diverse backgrounds, including a delegation from the United States and students from several Chennai colleges.

The trail explored the Adyar’s cultural significance, particularly its historical importance to the city’s weaver communities. Mr. Sriram noted its decline from a vital freshwater source. Mr. Thirunavukkarasu focused on the river’s hydrological aspects, revealing that it historically collected water from nearly 457 tanks, contributing to past flooding. He emphasized the lack of data collection points in the southern arm of the river, hindering accurate flood risk assessment. The need for improved data collection through rain and stream gauges was underscored.

The U.S. delegation, including representatives from the San Antonio River Authority and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, observed the river’s current state near the Maraimalai Adigal bridge and Kotturpuram. They will share their experiences with San Antonio River restoration with Chennai stakeholders. The event also included representatives from the U.S. Consulate General Chennai. The diverse group of participants offered a collaborative approach to understanding the Adyar’s past, present, and future.
