Fri Jan 03 17:53:38 UTC 2025: ## Maharashtra Launches Inquiry into Rural Healthcare After Maternal and Neonatal Deaths

**Mumbai, January 3, 2025** – The Maharashtra government has launched a high-level inquiry into the healthcare system in Palghar district following two maternal deaths and one neonatal death within a month. The inquiry will evaluate the quality of healthcare services and access to medical care, particularly in the district’s tribal-dominated areas.

The most recent incident involved 31-year-old Kunta Vaibhav Padvale, who died on December 31st after experiencing complications during childbirth. Despite being transferred to better-equipped facilities, delays in care and a shortage of medical staff contributed to the tragic outcome. Padvale suffered from Hepatitis B and severe Polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid), which likely complicated her labor and led to an amniotic fluid embolism.

A previous maternal death occurred on December 26th, highlighting a pattern of concern. The inquiry will address critical staffing shortages in Palghar’s remote healthcare facilities. Currently, only 33 of 91 approved positions for MBBS medical officers are filled, and specialist positions are similarly understaffed. The Civil Surgeon, Dr. Ramdas Marada, stated that the health department is employing a rotational deployment of existing staff to address immediate needs but emphasized the urgent need for the state government to fill vacancies to ensure timely and adequate patient care. The challenge lies in attracting healthcare professionals to work in remote regions rather than urban centers.
