Wed Jan 01 07:33:17 UTC 2025: ## Pakistan Begins Two-Year Term on UN Security Council

**Islamabad, January 1, 2025** – Pakistan commenced its two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today. Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s top UN diplomat, pledged an “active and constructive” role in addressing global challenges.

This marks Pakistan’s eighth time on the 15-member council. Elected in June with an overwhelming 182 votes, Pakistan secured its seat significantly exceeding the required two-thirds majority.

Ambassador Akram acknowledged the current period of significant geopolitical instability, including ongoing wars and an escalating arms race. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to working within the UN Charter to promote peace, resolve disputes, and mitigate the negative impacts of great power rivalry and terrorism.

Pakistan replaces Japan on the council, taking over the Asian seat. Other new non-permanent members for 2025-2026 include Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia. They join the five permanent members (US, Russia, China, UK, and France) and the five non-permanent members elected in 2024.
