**Puducherry, December 31, 2024** – The year 2024 proved to be a tumultuous one for Puducherry, marked by political upheaval, natural disasters, and a vibrant cultural scene. The Union Territory (UT) saw three Lieutenant Governors assume office, following Tamilisai Soundararajan’s departure to contest Lok Sabha elections. This was followed by the appointment of C. P. Radhakrishnan in an interim capacity, and finally, K. Kailashnathan as the permanent appointee.
Despite the ruling All India N.R Congress-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition losing the Lok Sabha seat to the Congress, the government implemented several pro-people initiatives. These included reopening ration shops, distributing Deepavali gifts, and initiating the distribution of monthly free rice. Recruitment drives across various departments were also launched. However, a controversial fuel price hike following the disbursement of cyclone relief funds left the government facing criticism.
Cyclone Fengal struck in December, causing significant damage and prompting the administration to provide Rs 5,000 to each of the 3.54 lakh ration card holders. The year also witnessed the emergence of a new political party, the Puducherry Maanila Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, founded by former MP M. Ramadass. The Congress party saw a resurgence after its candidate won the Lok Sabha seat.
While the cultural scene thrived with numerous high-profile performances, including those by Gratte Ciel and the Alliance Francaise, several Smart City projects remained stalled despite an approaching March 2025 deadline. The restoration of the Calve College was a notable exception. The government also declared 131 buildings as protected heritage structures and approved the restoration of the century-old Police Headquarters. Significant developments in the transport sector included plans for electric buses and e-rickshaws and a revision of bus fares. In short, 2024 was a year of contrasts for Puducherry, a blend of political change, environmental challenges, and cultural achievements.
