Wed Jan 01 15:04:09 UTC 2025: ## New Orleans New Year’s Attack: 10 Dead, Dozens Injured in Suspected Terrorist Incident

**New Orleans, LA** – A suspected act of terrorism left ten dead and over 35 injured in New Orleans’ French Quarter on New Year’s Day. A pickup truck plowed into a large crowd celebrating at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets at approximately 3:15 am, followed by a gunfight between the driver and police.

The driver, who is now deceased, intentionally targeted the crowd at high speed, according to police superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. She stated that the driver “was hell-bent on creating carnage.” Two police officers were also shot but are in stable condition.

The FBI, who have taken operational control of the investigation, confirmed the discovery of a suspected explosive device at the scene. They are investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.

Witnesses described the truck smashing through a barricade before the driver exited and exchanged gunfire with police. Many were injured and needed immediate medical attention. The French Quarter, known for its vibrant nightlife, was packed with revelers at the time of the attack.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry described the event as a “horrific act of violence.” The incident comes just days after a similar car-ramming attack in Magdeburg, Germany, resulting in five deaths and over 200 injuries.

The New Orleans Police Department had increased staffing for New Year’s celebrations, with additional officers from partner agencies deployed. The city was preparing for the upcoming Sugar Bowl football game. The investigation is ongoing.
