**Kozhikode, Kerala – December 26, 2024** – Acclaimed Malayalam writer, director, and screenwriter MT Vasudevan Nair passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 91 at Kozhikode Baby Memorial Hospital. He had been hospitalized since December 15th due to severe breathing difficulties. His death has sparked widespread mourning across Kerala and the wider Indian film and literary communities.
Nair, a towering figure in Malayalam literature and cinema, will be cremated with state honours on Thursday afternoon at the Mavoor Road crematorium. Thousands gathered at his residence and the crematorium to pay their last respects. The Kerala government has declared Thursday and Friday as official days of mourning.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led the tributes, describing Nair as a “towering figure” whose works captured the beauty and complexity of Kerala life. He noted Nair’s significant contributions to short story writing, novel writing, screenplay writing, film direction, journalism, and cultural leadership. Many prominent figures from the fields of politics, cinema, and literature visited his residence to offer condolences, including actors Mohanlal and Mammootty.
Mohanlal, who acted in several films based on Nair’s scripts, described the writer as a mentor and highlighted the privilege of portraying characters created by him. Mammootty shared a heartfelt message on Facebook, expressing a profound sense of loss and recalling a poignant moment when he supported Nair after a fall several months ago.
While the family honored Nair’s wish to avoid a public viewing of his body, a massive crowd still gathered to express their grief and pay tribute to the literary icon. A condolence meeting will be held at the crematorium following the cremation ceremony.
