Thu Dec 26 00:35:00 UTC 2024: ## Syrian Unrest Intensifies After Police Ambush

**Damascus, Syria –** Fourteen Syrian police officers were killed and ten wounded in an ambush by forces loyal to the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime in Tartous countryside on Thursday, according to the transitional administration. This attack follows widespread unrest, including overnight curfews and demonstrations, marking the most significant upheaval since Assad’s removal over two weeks ago.

The unrest is largely centered around concerns among Syria’s Alawite and Shi’ite Muslim minority communities, who fear persecution under the new Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) led government. Demonstrations erupted in Homs, prompting an overnight curfew, and smaller protests occurred along the coast, the Alawite heartland. These protests followed reports of violence targeting Alawites in recent days.

While the demands of the protestors remain unclear, the timing coincides with the online circulation of a video appearing to show the desecration of an Alawite shrine in Aleppo. The Syrian Interior Ministry attributed this video to events during the November rebel offensive, alleging attempts to incite sectarian violence. The Ministry also reported attacks by former regime forces on interior ministry units in the coastal region.

The new administration, despite repeated assurances of protecting religious minorities, faces growing challenges in maintaining order amidst escalating tensions and widespread anxiety over the future of the country. The situation remains volatile, with the full extent of the unrest yet to be confirmed.
