**Kozhikode, Kerala:** Eminent Malayalam writer and Jnanpith awardee M.T. Vasudevan Nair passed away late tonight at a Kozhikode hospital. He was 91. Nair had been hospitalized for 11 days following heart and respiratory issues, exacerbated by a heart attack earlier this week. His condition worsened today with a decline in kidney and heart function, ultimately leading to his demise.

Nair, a prolific and versatile writer, left an indelible mark on Malayalam literature and cinema. His contributions spanned novels, short stories, screenplays, plays, children’s literature, travelogues, and essays. He also served as a newspaper editor and directed six feature films, including the critically acclaimed *Nirmalyam*, and two documentaries.

A recipient of numerous awards, including the Jnanpith Award and the Padma Bhushan, Nair’s accolades include the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, J.C. Daniel Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Vayalar Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, and Vallathol Award. He also won four National Film Awards for Best Screenplay and three Kerala State Film Awards for Best Director, along with eleven State Film Awards for Best Screenplay.

His wife, Kalamandalam Saraswati, and daughters Sithara and Ashwathi survive him. A public viewing will be held at his residence, ‘Sithara,’ until late this evening. His funeral will take place tomorrow at 5 pm. His passing is a profound loss to the world of literature and the state of Kerala. Tributes have poured in from across the country, with Governor Arif Mohammed Khan among those expressing grief.
