**Visakhapatnam, December 25:** The Telugu film “Srikakulam Sherlock Holmes,” starring Vennela Kishore, opened in theaters today. The comedic detective thriller, directed by Mohan and produced by Vennepusa Ramana Reddy, attempts to unravel a murder mystery set against the backdrop of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991. While the film boasts a premise involving a private detective solving a murder within a week, critics say it falls short of expectations.
The plot revolves around the murder of Puli Dandi Mary on May 21, 1991, in Visakhapatnam, coinciding with Rajiv Gandhi’s death. A police CI challenges himself to solve the case within a week, prompting the assignment of the investigation to a private detective, Sherlock Holmes (Vennela Kishore), aided by Constable Lakshmi (Aditi Gautam). The detective interviews seven suspects, including a telephone booth operator, a worker at a disabled children’s home, and a suspended police officer.
While the first half builds suspense through the interviews, the second half, featuring a flashback of Sherlock Holmes’ past, is deemed underwhelming by critics. The connection to Rajiv Gandhi’s death is considered unnecessary and doesn’t enhance the main plot. Furthermore, the Srikakulam dialect is poorly executed, and the climax is described as predictable and cliché. The comedy is also noted as ineffective, with serious scenes unintentionally undermined. Performances are mixed, with Ananya Nagalla receiving praise, while Aditi Gautam’s performance is criticized. Technical aspects, particularly the dubbing and background music, also receive negative feedback.
Overall, the film receives a 2 out of 10 rating from the reviewer, citing a weak plot, unconvincing climax, and poor execution of several crucial elements. The reviewer questions the involvement of producer Vamsi Nandpadi, who has recently produced successful films. The film’s attempt at a comedic, suspenseful murder mystery ultimately fails to deliver, leaving audiences likely unsatisfied.
