MUMBAI, INDIA – Varun Dhawan’s highly anticipated action thriller, “Bawaal,” a remake of the Tamil film “Theri,” has finally hit theaters. Directed by Kalias and produced by Atlee, the film features a cameo by Salman Khan, generating considerable buzz. While the film delivers on action, critics point to a lack of depth beyond the thrills.
Dhawan plays a dual role as Baby John and IPS officer Satya Verma. The story follows John’s life with his young daughter until a police call throws him into the past, revealing a harrowing tale of a teenage girl’s rape and murder six years prior. The film effectively uses flashbacks to unravel the mystery.
The action sequences, designed by Sunil Rodrigues, are lauded as a highlight, with Dhawan delivering a powerful performance. Tharman S’s background score further enhances the intensity. Rajpal Yadav provides much-needed comic relief in the second half, while Jackie’s portrayal of the villain is also considered impactful. While Wamika Gabbi delivers a solid performance as Tara (Khushi’s teacher), her role doesn’t significantly impact the narrative. Kirti Suresh, making her Bollywood debut as Satya’s doctor wife, offers a commendable performance.
However, the film is criticized for its underwhelming songs, described as boring and detracting from the overall experience. While “Bawaal” offers a thrilling action spectacle, the lack of depth in the narrative and weak musical score may leave viewers wanting more.
