Sat Dec 21 18:35:31 UTC 2024: ## Albania Bans TikTok for a Year Following Teen’s Stabbing
**TIRANA, Albania** – Albania has implemented a nationwide ban on TikTok for one year, effective early next year. The decision, announced Saturday by Prime Minister Edi Rama, follows the fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old boy last month, allegedly stemming from an online dispute on the platform.
The government cites concerns over the impact of social media, particularly TikTok, on youth violence. Prime Minister Rama stated that the ban is a necessary measure to protect children, highlighting videos that emerged on TikTok appearing to condone the killing. He emphasized that the issue is not solely with children, but with societal influences and platforms like TikTok that he claims hold children “hostage.”
The decision comes after extensive consultations with parents and teachers, involving over 1,300 meetings following the stabbing incident. The government plans to assess TikTok’s response and the effects of the ban before deciding whether to reinstate the app.
The opposition has strongly criticized the ban, calling it a “dictatorial decision” and an infringement on freedom of speech. Lawmaker Ina Zhupa of the Democratic Party characterized it as an abuse of power aimed at electoral gain.
This move places Albania among a growing number of countries implementing stricter social media regulations for minors. Australia recently enacted a complete social media ban for children under 16, while other European nations have imposed various restrictions. TikTok itself is facing scrutiny globally, including investigations into alleged espionage and election interference. The platform boasts over one billion active users worldwide.
