Fri Dec 20 18:28:36 UTC 2024: **Labour’s Raval Nominated for House of Lords Peerage**

London, UK – Krish Raval, chair of the Labour Party’s diaspora group Labour Indians, has been nominated for a life peerage in the House of Lords by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The nomination, one of 30 announced by Downing Street, is subject to approval by King Charles III.

Raval, who received an OBE in 2018 for his work in leadership education and interfaith cohesion, is the Founder-Director of Faith in Leadership, an Oxford-based organization. He will join the Labour benches in the Upper House alongside prominent figures such as Starmer’s former chief of staff Sue Gray and former shadow minister Thangam Debbonnaire.

The nominations, which also include selections from the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties, aim to address the imbalance of power in the House of Lords, where the Conservatives currently hold the largest number of seats. Once approved, the Labour Party is projected to have 217 peers, the Conservatives 279, and the Liberal Democrats 80. Over 180 crossbench peers remain unaffiliated to any party. Notable nominations include former Deputy Prime Minister Therese Coffey (Conservative) and British Pakistani councillor Shaffaq Mohammed (Liberal Democrat). Further nominations are expected from former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The appointments process involves vetting by the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC) followed by formal approval by the King.
