ARLINGTON, TX – The Carthage Bulldogs are on the cusp of a monumental achievement, needing just one more win to reach 100 postseason victories since their first playoff appearance in 1943. Currently boasting a 99-win record, the East Texas powerhouse is set to face Waco La Vega in the Class 4A Division II state championship game at AT&T Stadium on Friday.
This marks Carthage’s 11th state championship appearance, their first being in 1991. The Bulldogs have already secured five postseason wins this year, building on their impressive nine state titles, aiming for a tenth. They hold a 2-1 record against La Vega in past playoff encounters, notably defeating them in the 2019 Class 4A Division I finals.
La Vega, meanwhile, is making their sixth state finals appearance, and fourth since 2015, having previously won titles in 2015 and 2018. Their high-powered offense, led by quarterback Kourtney Parr and running back Bryson Roland, presents a formidable challenge. Roland alone amassed 2,045 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns this season.
Friday’s game promises a thrilling matchup. While Carthage’s KJ Edwards showcased his talent with an impressive 86-yard touchdown run in the first half, La Vega demonstrated their offensive prowess throughout the game. The first half ended with Carthage leading 14-7. The final score and outcome will determine whether Carthage achieves its century mark and claims its tenth state championship.
