Fri Dec 20 04:13:38 UTC 2024: ## Ivy League Grad Faces Federal Death Penalty Charges in CEO Murder
**New York, NY** – Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, appeared in a Manhattan court Thursday on new federal charges related to the murder of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson. The charges, which include murder using a firearm, two counts of stalking, and using an illegal gun silencer, carry the possibility of the death penalty.
Mangione, who was already facing multiple state charges in Pennsylvania, waived extradition and was transferred to New York for the arraignment. During the brief court appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker, he said little.
According to a federal criminal complaint, Mangione traveled from Georgia to New York specifically to stalk and kill Thompson. A notebook recovered from Mangione’s possession contained writings expressing hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives, including entries referencing a plan to “wack” an insurance company CEO. The complaint also notes that shell casings found at the murder scene were marked with the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose,” terms often associated with insurance claim denials.
Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, described the simultaneous state and federal prosecutions as “highly unusual.” FBI New York Field Office’s James Dennehy characterized the alleged actions as a “carefully premeditated and targeted execution,” highlighting what he called a “cavalier attitude towards humanity.”
Supporters gathered outside the courthouse, holding signs expressing support for Mangione and criticizing the health insurance industry. The case has raised significant attention due to its unusual circumstances and the potential for capital punishment.
