**New Delhi, India** – A political firestorm erupted after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, prompting sharp criticism from opposition leaders. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav called for Shah’s resignation, accusing him of harboring hatred for the architect of the Indian Constitution. “Amit Shah has gone mad,” Yadav declared, adding that Shah should “renounce politics and leave.”
His son and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav echoed the sentiment, branding Shah and the BJP as “anti-constitution” for their actions. Both Yadavs emphasized the profound respect they hold for Ambedkar.
The controversy stems from Shah’s speech in the Rajya Sabha, where he remarked that invoking Ambedkar’s name had become a political “fashion” for the Congress party. This sparked outrage across the opposition, including the Congress, TMC, DMK, Left parties, and Shiv Sena (UBT). The ensuing protests led to the adjournment of both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday.
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended Shah, claiming the statement was distorted, the opposition, led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, demanded Shah’s dismissal. Kharge challenged Modi to show respect for Ambedkar by sacking his Home Minister. Modi, in turn, accused the Congress of attempting to undermine Ambedkar’s legacy. Shah himself maintained that his words were misinterpreted and that he did not intend to insult Ambedkar.
