**Madurai, December 16, 2024** – Public Works Minister E.V. Velu stated today that damage to bridges during flash floods is unavoidable, despite careful construction. Following an inspection of a Goripalayam flyover, currently 25% complete and slated for completion by December 2025, he explained that while bridges are designed with anticipated water flow in mind, unexpectedly high volumes can cause damage. He added that building bridges to withstand extreme flood events would increase costs fourfold, making it financially unfeasible.

The Melamadai flyover, 32% complete, is projected to open by August 2025. Minister Velu also announced plans for a three-story extension to the Kalaignar Centenary library in Madurai to accommodate increased usage, pending Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s approval.
