**Madison, WI** – A shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, has left three people dead and several others injured. Authorities confirmed that a 17-year-old female student is suspected of carrying out the attack before taking her own life.
The shooting, which occurred just after 11 am local time, claimed the lives of a teacher and a teenage student, in addition to the shooter. At least five individuals were transported to area hospitals with injuries. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that responding officers did not discharge their weapons. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
“Today is a sad, sad day,” Chief Barnes stated during a press conference, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States. He emphasized the lasting trauma experienced by all those involved.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are collaborating on the investigation. Roads surrounding the school were temporarily closed.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers offered condolences and prayers to the school community, expressing gratitude for the swift response of first responders. The White House confirmed that President Biden has been briefed on the incident.
This tragedy comes amidst a surge in school shootings across the nation. According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, 2024 has already seen 322 school shootings, the second-highest number since 1966, surpassed only by last year’s total of 349. Despite widespread public support for stricter gun control measures, legislative action remains stalled due to powerful pro-gun lobbying groups.
