Mon Dec 16 17:07:17 UTC 2024: ## Madurai Court Refers Vandiyur Lake Construction Case to Special Bench
**Madurai, December 16, 2024** – The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition challenging constructions on the Sundaram Park premises bordering Vandiyur lake to a Special Bench. The petition, filed by M. Pozhilan, alleges that the construction of food stalls will contaminate the ecologically sensitive lake.
The Division Bench, comprising Justices M.S. Ramesh and A.D. Maria Clete, deemed the matter appropriate for the Special Bench, headed by Justices G.R. Swaminathan and B. Pugalendhi, which specializes in encroachment and waterbody-related cases. This follows a similar case last week where the Special Bench already restrained the Madurai Corporation from further construction on the lake bunds. That petition, filed by advocate R. Manibharathi, sought the removal of existing structures built under the guise of beautification.
