**Kannur, Kerala – December 17, 2024** – Kerala Police have filed cases against 14 identified Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists and approximately 100 others following a protest march on Monday, December 16th. The protest, targeting the alleged inaction of authorities regarding the arrest of an SFI activist and police response to injuries sustained by KSU members during earlier clashes at Thottada ITI, ended with police using water cannons to disperse the demonstrators.
The charges, filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Kerala Police Act, include non-bailable offenses related to unlawful assembly, rioting, and damage to public property. Prominent KSU leaders, including state vice president Muhammed Shammas and several district presidents and general secretaries, are named in the complaint filed by Town Sub-Inspector P.P. Shameel. The protest highlights ongoing tensions between rival student unions, the KSU and SFI, in Kannur.
