**Seoul, South Korea** – South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been impeached by parliament following a highly controversial declaration of martial law earlier this month. A vote in the National Assembly saw 204 out of 300 lawmakers approving the impeachment motion, suspending the President from office.
The impeachment stems from Yoon’s December 3rd declaration of martial law, a move which sparked widespread outrage and a constitutional crisis. Soldiers were deployed to the National Assembly with orders to forcibly remove lawmakers, preventing them from reaching the quorum needed to overturn the declaration. While Yoon accused the opposition of paralyzing the government, the martial law was rescinded within hours of its implementation.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has assumed the role of acting president while the Constitutional Court considers the impeachment. This process could take up to six months, ultimately deciding whether to permanently remove Yoon from office or reinstate him.
This is the second impeachment attempt against Yoon. While he survived a previous motion, this time, defections within his own People Power Party contributed to his impeachment. Opposition leader Park Chan-dae hailed the vote as “a victory for the South Korean people and for democracy.” President Yoon, who reportedly watched the vote from his residence, has yet to issue a public statement. Furthermore, he faces ongoing criminal investigations related to his decision to impose martial law.
