Sat Dec 14 23:08:00 UTC 2024: ## Neglect Leads to Ceiling Collapses at Historic French Museum in India
**Kolkata, India – December 15, 2024** – The Institut de Chandernagor, a renowned French museum housed in the Dupleix Palace in Chandannagar, India, has suffered two significant ceiling collapses in recent weeks, raising serious concerns about the building’s maintenance and the safety of visitors.
The first incident occurred during the Durga Puja holidays in October while the museum was closed. The second, more alarming collapse happened on November 26th, while the central hall was crowded with visitors, including several foreigners. A large concrete chunk fell onto a table where the handover of Chandannagar to India was historically signed, narrowly missing individuals.
Basabi Pal, the institute’s director since 2022, expressed deep distress over the incidents, highlighting the potential for serious injury or fatality. She described the near-miss as a “miraculous escape” and voiced her frustration with the lack of maintenance. She has contacted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), responsible for the building’s upkeep, urging immediate action.
The ASI acknowledged the situation, stating that a conservation proposal has been submitted for approval. However, Director Pal stressed the urgency of repairs, warning that further delays could lead to irreparable damage or even loss of life.
The museum, a significant historical site, houses a valuable collection of artifacts and a historic library. The library, run by the West Bengal government, has been without a librarian for twelve years, further highlighting the broader issue of neglect impacting the institution. The incidents have left visitors traumatized and cast a shadow on the museum’s reputation, prompting calls for swift and decisive action to preserve this important piece of history.
