CHENNAI, INDIA – E.V.K.S. Elangovan, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party, passed away this morning at the age of 75 due to a prolonged illness. He was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Chennai where his condition deteriorated this morning, despite receiving intensive care. His funeral is scheduled for tomorrow in Chennai.

Elangovan’s death comes less than a year after the passing of his son, Thirumahan Evera, at age 46, due to a heart attack. Thirumaghan Evera, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Erode East constituency, had won the seat in 2021. His untimely death deeply affected Elangovan.

Following his son’s death, Elangovan contested and won the subsequent by-election in Erode East, marking his return to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly after a 34-year gap. His initial entry into the Assembly was in 1984, representing the Sathyamangalam constituency. He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) after winning a parliamentary election. He held several key positions within the Congress party, including Minister in the Central Government and state party president.

Elangovan’s political career spanned decades, witnessing highs and lows, culminating in his recent return to the Assembly, only to be cut short by his passing. His contributions to the Congress party and his service to the people of Tamil Nadu will be remembered.
