Fri Dec 13 23:02:31 UTC 2024: ## 17-Year-Old D Gukesh Crowned Youngest Undisputed World Chess Champion
**Singapore** – In a historic victory, 17-year-old Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh has become the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history. He defeated reigning champion Ding Liren of China 7.5-6.5 in a thrilling match held in Singapore, winning three games and losing only two.
Gukesh’s triumph culminates a decade of dedication and sacrifice by his family, and a year of remarkable achievements. He began 2024 by winning the Candidates Tournament, followed by double gold at the Chess Olympiad. His victory over Ding Liren secures him the title and a prize of US$1,900,000.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Gukesh expressed his gratitude to his family, coaches, sponsors (including Westbridge and Velammal School), and fans, highlighting the unwavering support that fueled his journey. He specifically thanked his parents, Dr. Rajini Kanth and Padma Kumari, for their tireless efforts. He also praised his opponent, Ding Liren, for his fighting spirit.
Gukesh’s victory marks a continuation of what many are calling a “Golden Era” for Indian chess, following India’s double gold win at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest earlier this year. His achievement is expected to inspire a new generation of chess players in India and beyond. The win also surpasses the previous record set by Viswanathan Anand, who became World Champion almost 24 years ago.
