Fri Dec 13 20:44:52 UTC 2024: ## Iran Boosts Uranium Enrichment, Sparking International Condemnation

**Vienna, December 14, 2024** – Iran has significantly increased its production of highly enriched uranium, prompting international concern and condemnation. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Iran’s Fordo enrichment plant will now produce over 34 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity per month—a substantial increase from the previous 4.7 kilograms. This level of enrichment is close to the 90% needed for a nuclear weapon.

While Iran maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, the IAEA highlights that it is the only non-nuclear-weapon state enriching uranium to this level. The increased enrichment follows Iran’s installation of advanced centrifuges in response to an IAEA resolution criticizing its lack of cooperation.

In response to Iran’s actions, the IAEA has secured an agreement for increased monitoring at the Fordo plant. However, Britain, France, and Germany have strongly condemned Iran’s move, urging a reversal and even raising the possibility of reinstating sanctions. The European Union also expressed deep concern over the development, citing the proximity to weapons-grade enrichment.

The escalation in nuclear tensions stems from the 2015 nuclear deal’s collapse after the US withdrawal under the Trump administration. The deal had previously limited Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The current situation reflects a renewed standoff between Iran and Western powers over the future of Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
