**Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 13, 2024** – Heavy rains lashed Kerala on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for three districts: Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Idukki. The red alert signifies extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours. Five other districts – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Thrissur – received an orange alert (11-20 cm rainfall), while a yellow alert (6-11 cm rainfall) was issued for Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Thiruvananthapuram city was particularly hard hit by the downpour. The IMD had earlier predicted light to moderate rainfall for the next five days, but warned of the possibility of very heavy rainfall in certain areas on Thursday.
