**Damascus, Syria –** After a swift and decisive offensive, rebel forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have overthrown the Assad regime in Syria, ending five decades of family rule. The rebels, who launched their offensive just two weeks ago, captured Aleppo and rapidly advanced southward, seizing Damascus on December 8th, 2024. President Bashar al-Assad and his family have been granted political asylum in Russia.
The speed of the HTS advance surprised many, with government forces offering little resistance as the rebels swept through major cities including Aleppo, Hama, and Homs. The fall of Aleppo triggered rebellions elsewhere in the country, with local militias and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) also making gains. HTS and its ally, the Syrian National Army, had reportedly informed Turkey of their planned offensive six months prior.
The collapse comes after years of relative quiet following the Assad regime’s recapture of several key territories. However, weakened external allies – Russia’s focus on Ukraine, Iranian losses in Israel, and Hezbollah’s own conflict with Israel – left the Assad regime vulnerable. The Syrian economy, already crippled by sanctions and the ravages of the 13-year civil war, faces a bleak future.
Mohammad al-Bashir has been appointed as Syria’s caretaker Prime Minister until March 1, 2025. The rebels now face the daunting challenge of rebuilding a nation devastated by war, with hundreds of thousands dead and infrastructure in ruins. The long-term implications of this dramatic regime change remain uncertain.
