**Hyderabad, India** – Popular Telugu film star Allu Arjun was arrested and subsequently released on bail following a fatal stampede at the premiere of his new film, *Pushpa 2*. A 39-year-old woman died and her son was critically injured in the crush at the Hyderabad theatre last week.
Arjun, who made a surprise appearance at the screening, was initially sentenced to 14 days in police custody on charges of culpable homicide. However, the high court overturned the decision, granting him bail hours later. The police had also filed charges against his security team and the theatre’s management, with the theatre owner and two employees already under arrest.
Police allege that Arjun’s arrival, unannounced to theatre management, caused a surge in the already large crowd. A police statement claims his security team exacerbated the situation by pushing through the throng. Arjun’s lawyer argued his client was not responsible, stating the stampede occurred on a different floor from where the actor was located.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about crowd safety and management at large public events in India. While accidents involving large crowds are not uncommon, the arrest of a major celebrity in such a case is unusual.
Following the tragedy, Arjun expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), offering financial assistance to the victim’s family and promising to cover the boy’s medical expenses. The film’s production company, Mythri Movie Makers, also pledged support. The investigation into the incident continues.
