Fri Dec 13 15:06:53 UTC 2024: ## India Moves Forward with “One Nation, One Election” Bills

**New Delhi, [Date]** – The Indian Union Cabinet approved two crucial bills Thursday aimed at implementing simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies. One bill proposes a constitutional amendment, while the other addresses the alignment of elections in Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu and Kashmir. These bills, expected to be introduced in the current Parliament session, will immediately be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further deliberation.

While the government hasn’t confirmed a timeline, the implementation could begin as early as 2029 or possibly 2034. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans extensive discussions, both within Parliament and through a public awareness campaign. The government has opted for a phased approach, initially focusing on national and state-level elections, leaving local body polls for a later stage.

This decision reflects the recommendations of the Kovind Committee, which proposed a two-stage process. The bills themselves can be passed without state-level ratification; however, future legislation concerning local elections or a single electoral roll would require the approval of at least half of the state legislatures.

The proposal has garnered mixed reactions. While 32 of 47 political parties consulted supported the idea, several opposition parties voiced strong objections. Supporters, including some regional parties, cite improved governance and efficiency as key benefits. Opponents express concerns about potential democratic setbacks. Despite the BJP’s reduced Lok Sabha majority, the party remains committed to the “One Nation, One Election” initiative, viewing it as a key priority.
