Fri Dec 13 12:36:34 UTC 2024: ## Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah Calls for Open Debate on ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill
**SRINAGAR, INDIA** – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged for an open and transparent parliamentary debate on the proposed “One Nation, One Election” bill, expressing concerns that it not be handled like the revocation of Article 370 in 2019. The bill, approved by the Modi cabinet earlier this month, aims to synchronize all national and state elections.
While acknowledging the cabinet’s approval of the proposal and the potential for its introduction in parliament next week, Abdullah stated that it is currently merely a cabinet proposal and hasn’t yet been presented before Parliament. He emphasized the need for a thorough and open debate before the National Conference (NC) takes a formal stance on the matter. The party will discuss the bill and instruct its MPs accordingly on how to vote, he added.
Abdullah’s cautious response follows similar calls for a comprehensive discussion from various political quarters. The bill, recommended by a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, is projected by the central government to boost India’s GDP by 1-1.5 percent if implemented. Proponents, including Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, argue that simultaneous elections would reduce disruptions to development work caused by frequent electoral processes. However, the opposition remains apprehensive about the potential impact on India’s federal structure and democratic processes.
