**Bengaluru, India –** S.M. Krishna, former Chief Minister of Karnataka and Governor of Maharashtra, passed away at the age of 92 early this morning at his residence in Bengaluru. The news has prompted widespread mourning across India.
Krishna, whose full name was Somanahalli Mallayya Krishna, had a distinguished political career spanning over six decades. He served as a Member of Parliament (both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha), held various ministerial positions at the state and central levels, including Union Minister (three times) and Minister of External Affairs. He also served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka before becoming Chief Minister in 1999. He was appointed Governor of Maharashtra later in his career, and joined the BJP in 2017.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute, describing Krishna as a towering personality who guided Maharashtra during his tenure as Governor. Fadnavis highlighted Krishna’s contributions across various legislative bodies and his dedication to educational reforms.
Krishna, who received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2023, is survived by his wife Prema and two daughters, Shambhavi and Malavika. His legacy extends beyond politics; he was also a professor of International Law at the Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya Law College in Bengaluru before entering politics. He began his political journey as an independent candidate in 1962, later aligning with the Praja Socialist Party.
