Sat Dec 07 19:02:18 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Housing Market Discriminates Against Single Women, Report Finds

**Chennai, Tamil Nadu, December 8, 2024** – Despite Tamil Nadu’s reputation for progressive policies and women’s safety, a new report reveals widespread discrimination against single women seeking rental housing in the state. Numerous women shared experiences of intrusive questioning, surveillance, and outright rejection based on factors like caste, profession, marital status, and sexual orientation.

The report, published in *The Hindu*, highlights the challenges faced by young professionals, particularly those in creative fields or with non-traditional work schedules. Landlords frequently asked invasive questions about their work, family, and even dietary habits, often imposing unnecessary restrictions on visitors and pets. Women working night shifts or in fields perceived as unconventional faced significant prejudice.

Several interviewees described being subjected to unwanted sexual advances, covert surveillance by landlords, and outright rejection due to their caste or religious background. Single mothers and members of minority communities faced particularly intense discrimination. Even those with stable employment and strong references encountered difficulties, highlighting the systemic nature of the problem.

While some landlords cited safety concerns as justification for their actions, the report argues these concerns often mask discriminatory practices that infringe on women’s autonomy. The report concludes that a middle ground needs to be found to balance legitimate safety concerns with the need to eliminate discriminatory practices in the housing market. Advocates call for a challenge to outdated prejudices and for a more equitable system that respects the rights and freedom of all renters.
