Sun Dec 08 02:31:39 UTC 2024: ## South Korean President Faces Impeachment Bid After Attempted Martial Law

**Seoul, South Korea** – South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing an impeachment attempt following his controversial attempt to impose martial law last week. In a televised address Saturday, President Yoon apologized for his actions, expressing deep regret and vowing never to repeat them. He also stated his willingness to accept any legal or political consequences.

However, his apology was not enough to quell the political storm. Immediately following the address, the leader of Yoon’s own People Power Party (PPP), Han Dong-hun, called for his resignation, declaring him unfit for office. Opposition lawmakers swiftly filed an impeachment motion, although securing the necessary two-thirds majority in the National Assembly remains uncertain.

The attempted imposition of martial law, which involved deploying heavily armed troops to surround the National Assembly, has sparked a major political crisis and alarmed key international allies, including Japan and the United States. Opposition MPs allege the action constituted a self-coup, citing the alleged arrest orders issued by President Yoon against several senior lawmakers, including Han Dong-hun, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, and National Assembly speaker Woo Won Shik, on charges of anti-state activities.

The defense ministry has suspended several officials implicated in the events, including the defense counterintelligence commander, Yeo In-hyung, while investigations into Yoon’s former defense minister, Kim Yong Hyun, suspected of instigating the martial law declaration, are underway. Acting Defense Minister Kim Seon Ho confirmed the deployment of military units to the National Assembly following the declaration.

Despite the PPP voting against impeachment during a parliamentary meeting, the crisis continues, leaving the President’s political future hanging in the balance. The impeachment motion’s success hinges on securing support from within the ruling party, a prospect that currently remains unclear.
