**NEW YORK, NY** – Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance division, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in a targeted attack outside the Hilton Midtown hotel, police confirmed. The incident occurred around 6:46 a.m. as Thompson arrived for a company conference.
According to police sources, a masked man, described as a white male wearing a coat, black face mask, and black and white sneakers, and carrying a gray backpack, allegedly waited for Thompson before opening fire on Sixth Avenue. Surveillance footage captured the shooter aiming his weapon and subsequently fleeing on a bicycle down Ziegfeld Alley.
First responders administered CPR at the scene, but Thompson was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Mayor Eric Adams stated that the shooting was a targeted murder and assured New Yorkers that it wasn’t a random act of violence. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty confirmed the incident, stating that the company’s Investor Day conference, which Thompson was attending, was immediately canceled. Witty praised Thompson’s contributions to the company, the nation’s largest private health insurer.
Thompson had been with UnitedHealth for 20 years, previously serving as head of government programs. Before joining UnitedHealth, he worked for PwC in Minneapolis. The company, ranked fourth in the Fortune 500, has not yet issued further comment.
