Wed Dec 04 16:08:46 UTC 2024: ## Karnataka to Adopt “Gujarat Model” for University Administration, Curbing Governor’s Powers
**Bengaluru, December 4, 2024** – The Karnataka government is planning to significantly reduce the Governor’s influence over state universities by adopting the “Gujarat model” of administration. Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar announced on Wednesday that proposed amendments to the Karnataka State Universities (KSU) Act, 2000, will limit the Governor’s role to only university convocations. Currently, the Governor serves as Chancellor of universities.
The move comes amidst ongoing clashes between the state government and the Raj Bhavan. The government recently decided to curtail the Governor’s powers in the Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University (RDPR University). However, Minister Sudhakar clarified that the proposed amendments to the KSU Act, impacting universities like Visvesvaraya Technological University, are separate from the changes made to the RDPR University.
The draft Bill, already prepared, will be reviewed by the Law Department before being presented to the Cabinet for approval. It is expected to be introduced during the winter session of the legislature in Belagavi. Minister Sudhakar cited administrative reforms as the reason for the necessary amendments, noting that previous attempts to amend the KSU Act were unsuccessful. The Minister highlighted the Gujarat model’s popularity as justification for its adoption in Karnataka.
