Wed Dec 04 13:39:49 UTC 2024: ## Coimbatore Sub-Inspector Transferred Following Allegations of Custodial Torture
**COIMBATORE, December 4, 2024** – A sub-inspector (SI) from the Mettupalayam police station in Coimbatore District (Rural) has been transferred to the Armed Reserve (AR) following allegations of custodial torture. SI Guru Chandra Vadivelu’s transfer comes after a complaint filed by Aishama, the mother of 21-year-old Taufeeq Umar, who alleges her son was severely assaulted while in custody.
According to the complaint filed with Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan on Tuesday, Umar, an auto-rickshaw driver, was summoned to the station on November 22nd. The SI allegedly assaulted Umar after stripping him, citing an investigation into a year-old incident where Umar slapped a 16-year-old boy. Aishama claims her son suffered severe injuries, including kidney failure requiring four dialysis sessions, as a result of the alleged torture.
Umar was initially treated at a Mettupalayam hospital for stomach ache, body pain, and blood in his urine before being transferred to a private hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment. The Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam also petitioned the SP, supporting the complaint.
The District Police confirmed Vadivelu’s transfer and stated that an inquiry into the allegations of custodial torture has been initiated by the SP. The investigation is ongoing.
