Wed Dec 04 15:34:17 UTC 2024: ## Telangana Rattled by 5.3 Magnitude Earthquake
**Mulugu, Telangana:** Telangana experienced a significant earthquake on Wednesday morning at 7:27 AM, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located 40 kilometers below the surface near Mulugu, in the Godavari River basin. The tremors were felt in neighboring districts like Mancherial, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Warangal, as well as in parts of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
This marks the second-largest earthquake in Telangana in the last 55 years, surpassed only by a 5.7 magnitude quake in Bhadrachalam in 1967. While smaller tremors have occurred since then, a 5.0+ magnitude earthquake is rare for the region.
Experts note that this area is not typically prone to high-intensity earthquakes. India is categorized into seismic zones (II-V), with Zone V being the most active. Telangana currently falls under Zone II, indicating a low risk of significant seismic activity. However, the presence of a fault zone in the Godavari River basin, where two tectonic plates meet, is believed to be the cause of this earthquake. The fault line’s movement releases immense energy, resulting in seismic activity. Geologists have identified several cracks and weaknesses in the Godavari basin, contributing to the increased likelihood of earthquakes in the area. Authorities are assessing the extent of any damage.
