Wed Dec 04 14:30:00 UTC 2024: ## UnitedHealthcare CEO Fatally Shot in Midtown Manhattan
**NEW YORK, NY** – Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan this morning in what police are investigating as a targeted attack. The shooting occurred around 6:40 a.m. near the New York Hilton on Sixth Avenue between 53rd and 54th Streets.
Thompson, who was in New York City for an investor conference at the Hilton, was struck in the chest and died at Mount Sinai West hospital. He was not staying at the hotel.
A witness, Amar Abdelmula, reported hearing a single gunshot and seeing a suspect, described as a tall, thin man (approximately 6’1″) wearing all black clothing including a jacket, hat, ski mask, and backpack, fleeing north on foot. Police have yet to make any arrests.
Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting was targeted, possibly due to Thompson’s public schedule. UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare and the world’s largest health insurer, has not yet released a statement. Thompson, a University of Iowa graduate, was appointed CEO in 2021.
The NYPD is urging anyone with information to come forward.
