Wed Dec 04 01:30:00 UTC 2024: ## India Braces for Varied Weather Extremes: Heavy Rains in South, Cold Snap Expected in North

**New Delhi, December 2, 2024** – As December begins, India is poised for a stark contrast in weather conditions. While the south grapples with the lingering effects of Cyclone Fengal, northern states anticipate a significant drop in temperature and the arrival of harsh winter.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep on December 4th. The IMD forecasts a temperature decrease in several north Indian states in the coming days, leading to a cold wave. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir’s higher altitudes are already experiencing snowfall.

Delhi, however, has yet to experience biting cold, with fog also reduced. The IMD predicts Delhi’s minimum temperature could reach 9°C by the weekend, signaling a potential cold snap. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 24°C and 26°C throughout the week, with minimum temperatures hovering around 9°C-11°C.

Skymet Weather, another forecasting agency, predicts light to moderate rainfall, with heavy rainfall in some areas, over the next 24 hours in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and south interior Karnataka. Light to moderate rainfall is also anticipated in Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Other areas expecting light showers include north interior Karnataka, south central Maharashtra, south Konkan and Goa, parts of Vidarbha, and south Odisha. Air quality in Delhi and the NCR is expected to remain poor.

The remnants of Cyclone Fengal, located near north interior Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka, have intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea. It is expected to move westwards over the next two days. A western disturbance is also present, along with a cyclonic circulation over east Bangladesh.
